Introduction to Psychology:

This engaging and rigorous psychology course provides students with a comprehensive overview of the fundamental concepts, theories, and methods within the field of psychology. Through a combination of lectures, discussions, readings, and hands-on activities, students will explore various topics related to human behavior, cognition, emotions, and mental processes. The course aims to foster critical thinking skills, promote an understanding of psychological principles, and encourage the application of psychological concepts to real-life situations.

Students will apply their knowledge through hands-on activities and use overarching themes to make connections among various topics and theories.

We will be using the textbook, Exploring Psychology in Modules, by David G. Myers and C. Nathan DeWall that approaches the essential concepts of psychology today as meticulous, relevant science within a broad human perspective to help students successfully engage with the content. A copy will be loaned to students to use for this class or can be purchased by the parent if they prefer their own copy.

During this introductory 14 week course, we will:

  • Facilitate learning by teaching critical thinking and helping students at every step.
  • Gain insight into the complexities of human behavior and the scientific methods used to study it, as well as an appreciation for the relevance of psychology in everyday life.
  • Present psychology as a science, emphasizing the process of inquiry and putting facts in the service of concepts.
  • Make sure students come away with an appreciation of psychology's big ideas, and with a deeper respect for humanity--what drives us, distinguishes us, unifies us.

Homework Expectations: students will have reading, writing, and research assignments to complete at home each week totalling approximately 1.5/2 hours depending on the type of student.

Grading: there will be no grades for this class but full class participation is still expected.

Food Note: there is no snack time scheduled for this class but students may bring a leak proof water bottle to class.
